DAY 1: DAR TO UDZUNGWA MOUNTAINS
Depart dar early and transfer by safari 4×4 to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, stopping for lunch on the way. Settle into your ensuite luxury tent at Hondo Hondo Tented Camp before enjoying an evening guided bird and primate walk. Numerous primates are visible in the forest bordering camp. These include yellow baboon, black and white colobus, sykes monkey, and the endemic Iringa Red Colobus. Notable birds in the area include numerous silvery cheeked, trumpeter and crowned hornbills (‘Hondo Hondo’ means ‘Hornbill’ in KiSwahili), the southern seedcracker, the collared palm thrush and long crested eagle. Dinner and overnight at Hondo Hondo.
DAY 2: SANJE WATERFALL TREK INTO THE UDZUNGWA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
Enjoy a spectacular breakfast with an unrivalled view of the forest as it wakes up. You can frequently see endemic Irinaga Red Colobus and Yellow Baboons from camp. Then drive to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. A packed lunch will be provided for you to enjoy on top of a 180m waterfall with magnificent views over Kilombero and Selous.
Make final preparations for your trek into the mountains, including a visit to the park HQ to complete the formalities. The hike up to Sanje Waterfalls is relatively short (max 2hrs) but is quite steep in places. This is the park’s most popular attraction, although it is unlikely that you will meet any other hikers. Once at Sanje there will be time to explore the forest and waterfalls, and even go for a swim in one of the plunge pools. You can get behind the third waterfall and jump out through it!
Descend and drive 6km back to Hondo Hondo and spend the rest of the evening relaxing at the Camp.
