General Info

We think that this is one of the best ‘southern circuit’ safaris possible in such a short time.

Dar es Salaam, the starting point for most southern circuit safaris, is just a short drive from Dar International Airport.

We offer trips covering all Tanzania’s parks so if you would like to make any changes to customise your tour please get in touch.

START DETAILS The day before the start of the safari , you’ll check into your hotel in Dar – we can arrange this for you, just let us know.
END DETAILS You’ll be returned to Dar to either fly home, overnight in a hotel, or tranasfer to Zanzibar or Northern Tanzania by plane or boat as you prefer.
WEAR Light clothing,  be comfortable.  Sensibe shoes, trainers or light boots, wide brimmed hat, bring binoculars!

DAY 1. DAR ES SALAAM TO UDZUNGWA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK STAYING AT HONDO HONDO TENTED CAMP – ENSUITE TENTED ROOMS

Depart Dar early  (6.00am) and transfer to the Udzungwa Mountains.   Lunch enroute in eeither Mikumi or Morogoro depending on the road conditions.   On arrival at Hondo Hondo settle into your comfortable ensuite room and enjoy a drink at thwe bar whilst watching wildlife.   You can see numerous animals from the bar including the endemic iringa red colobus.  Other primates include the black and white colobus, the yellow babon and the sykes monkey.   Harvey’s Red Duiker and mongoose arealso common visitors.

DAY 2. TRANSFER TO IFAKARA, CANNOE TO MIKEREGEMBE FISHING VILLAGE ON THE BORDER OF SELOUS – CAMPING

After an amazing breakfast head 60km to Ifakara and visit the vibrant market where your cook will stock up on fresh vegetables for your trip.  Then down to the river to meet your canoe and boatment from the Wadamba tribe  (‘wadamba’ means ‘people of the valley’).  Cannoe down the mighty Kilomber River for 3-4 hours until you arrive at Mikeregembe Fishing Village.   Here yu will camp in a community campsite.   this is a very remote village and you will truly experience the remoteness.  Elephants sometimes walk through the village and there are often hippo in the river.

DAY 3. FULL DAY EXPLORING MIKEREGEMBE, VILLAGE TOUR, FISH ON THE RIVER, WALKING SAFARI TO THE EDGE OF SELOUS – CAMPING

Explore the remote village, see how nets are made and fish prepared for market.  This is a rare opportunity to glimpse traditional river life that has remined largly unchanged for over 100 years. Enjoy fishing and walking afaris as you prefer.   Based camping in at the community campsite.

DAY 4. TRANSFER BY 4X4 TO IFAKARA, LUNCH, THEN TO HONDO HONDO TENTED CAMP.  AFTERNOON BIRD AND MONKEY WALK.

After breakfast take your leave of the villager and transfer by 4×4 to Hondo Hondo with a stop at the Ifakara Women’s Weavers on the way.  This NGO helps single women earn an income and makes some of the best kikois, scarves and bedspreads in the country.   At Hondo Hondo  have lunch and settlei nto your ensuite room and then go on an afternoon bird and monkey walk.

DAY 5. WONDERFUL HIKING IN UDZUNGWA –  SANJE WATER FALLS, BASED AT HONDO HONDO TENTED CAMP

Enjoy a spectacular breakfast with an unrivalled view of the forest as it wakes up. You can frequently see endemic Irinaga Red Colobus and Yellow Baboons from camp. Then drive to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. A packed lunch will be provided for you to enjoy on top of a 180m waterfall with magnificent views over Kilombero and Selous.

Make final preparations for your trek into the mountains, including a visit to the park HQ to complete the formalities. The hike up to Sanje Waterfalls is relatively short (max 2hrs) but is quite steep in places. This is the park’s most popular attraction, although it is unlikely that you will meet any other hikers. Once at Sanje there will be time to explore the forest and waterfalls, and even go for a swim in one of the plunge pools. You can get behind the third waterfall and jump out through it!

Descend and drive 6km back to Hondo Hondo and spend the rest of the evening relaxing at the Camp.

DAY 6. UDZUNGWA TO MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK, CAMPING IN THE PARK.

After another spectacular Hondo Hondo Breakfast transfer the 60km to Mikumi National Park.  here you will camp at the Hipp Pols Campsite, right in the heart of the park.   Have lunch before heading off on an afternoon game drive looking for lions, leopard and the elusive wild dog.   At night you will be joined by an armed ranger for your protection.  You wil fall asleep to the sound of lions roaring.

DAY 7. MORNING GAME DRIVE AND RETURN TO DAR, LUNCH ON THE WAY.

Final drive in Mikumi before heading back to Dar.  This safari can comnine with trips to Zanzibar or the North of Tanzania as you prefer – just let us know.
