Karatu is a village just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is a cheaper place to stay then inside protected area. It has a range of hotels available and is a base for safaris into both the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park. It is also possible to go on a day visit to the Hadzabe at Lake Eyasi from Karatu.

Accommodation in and around Karatu ranges from budget camping to luxury lodges (for example Gibbs Farm) . Whichever base you choose there are numerous activities that you can enjoy around Karatu. There are cultural tours to traditional bomas, visits to coffee plantations, bird walks in the farmland and numerous arts and crafts on display.
