Mt. Meru is part of the Arusha National Park located 45 km from Arusha town. The Park contains the 4556m high mountain (5th highest in Africa), Ngurdoto Crater, the Momella soda lakes, as well as thick cloud and montane forests, acacia woodlands and grasslands. Home to elephants, large herds of buffalo, bushbuck, giraffe and duiker, the park is the also a good place to observe the interesting black-and-white colobus monkeys.
For primate viewing, Tanzania provides great diversity. It is home to the famous chimp park - Gombe Stream National Park, the less well known Mahale Mountains National Park, and the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Gombe and Mahale are two of the few locations where chimpanzees may be observed in the wild and Udzungwa has the highest primate diversity of any National Park in East Africa.
Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains are only usually available as luxury options, and bookings are subject to availability however we have also created an itinerary to visit the parks on a more reasonable budget. We offer 4 to 8 day chimpanzee viewing packages flying in and out to Dar es Salaam. The accommodation is in excellent lodges in the parks.
The Udzungwa Mountains has 4 species of monkey that are easy to see - the Udzungwa red colobus, Sanje created Mangeby, Black and while colobus and BLue monkey. Often, several species can be seen from the restaurant at Udzungwa Forest Camp Hondo Hondo.
