Diwali, or the Hindu, Sikh and Jain Festival of Light, is celebrated around the world usually in the months of October or November. In this festival, the lighting of lamps and the setting off of fireworks symbolises the triumph of good over evil in every human being. Dar es Salaam has a large Indian population, and as a result Diwali is an important celebration here. Down town Dar is turned over to the Diwali festival, and the whole city centre becomes a street party zone!

Diwali in Dar is a unique event. The streets teem with people of all ages and races, grasping fireworks and setting them off by hand all over the city streets. Small children bearing large rockets run down the pavements screaming with joy. The atmosphere truly is electric as the cracks and bangs of fireworks keep up a continuous racket and everywhere you turn another firework or rocket is shooting into the sky. Explosions of colour and sound make this Diwali festival a truly spectacular experience and one which every member of the family will find thrilling and definitely memorable!
