Whale Sharks

Whale Sharks

The Whale Sharks - the worlds largest fish - migrate down the east coast of Africa during the months of October to March and the best place to see them, or even swim quietly with them, is on the west coast of Mafia Island, near Ras Mbizi Lodge.

Weighing up to 35 tons, shale sharks may travel up to 13,000 miles to find rich feeding grounds - typically river deltas where nutrients are washed out to sea. The Rufiji river delta by Mafia island is a perfect spot. Swimming with whale sharks is one of the things to do before you die!

The best time to see whale sharks in Mafia is late December to February, though its usually possible to see them right through the season from October to March.
