Mtwara Budget Hotels

There are several budget hotels available in Mtwara though we usually advise people to stay in nearby Mikindani as we think it is a nicer environment. Below are brief descriptions of the hotels to be found in Mtwara.

VETA is a vocational training center for the Tourism industry. It has clean reasonably priced All rooms have large beds, fans, a TV and an en-suite bathroom. There is also a reasonable restaurant at VETA which serves local food. It has ocean views and is about 200m back from the water (note there is no good swimming beach here).

The Southern Cross Hotel has excellent rooms with good bathroooms. It is in the Shangani area of Mtwara on a little hill just outside town. The excellent Shangani beach is just a short walk away. There is also a good restaurant at the Southern Cross Hotel which is well situated for sun-downers. Profits from this hotel go to help the primary health care in the Mtwara Region.

The Lutheran Hostel provides basic rooms with en-suite facilities. The rooms vary quite a lot so it is worth checking a few out before settling in. The Lutheran Hostel is on the southern edge of Mtwara. Basic local meals can be obtained with prior arrangement.

The Korosho Hotel in the town center has basic impersonal but room with cold water and clean bathrooms. The a restaurant is also basic.

The Drive-in Garden and Cliff Bar is a shady, secure campsite It has only bucket baths and a small restaurant serving tasty meals with advance notice. There are several simple, clean rooms in a six-bed house that has a refrigerator and small stove.
